Fix Shadow API Exposure in Flask
Shadow APIs are undocumented, unmonitored endpoints lurking in your production environment—relics of legacy versions, forgotten debug tools, or 'internal' routes exposed to the public. To a researcher, these are goldmines; to a defender, they are catastrophic blind spots. Fixing this requires strict route inventory, environment-based gating, and automated documentation.
The Vulnerable Pattern
from flask import Flask, jsonifyapp = Flask(name)
@app.route(‘/api/v1/health’) def health(): return jsonify({“status”: “ok”})
SHADOW API: Forgotten debug endpoint left by a dev
No authentication, not documented in the public spec
@app.route(‘/debug/config/dump’) def dump_internal_config(): return jsonify({“db_uri”: “postgresql://admin:secret@prod-db:5432/db”, “api_keys”: [“sk_live_123”]})
The Secure Implementation
To eliminate Shadow APIs, follow these three mandates: 1. Environment Isolation: Use environment variables (FLASK_ENV) to ensure debug or administrative routes are never registered in production. 2. Explicit Blueprints: Group routes into Blueprints to manage versioning and visibility centrally. 3. Schema Enforcement: Use tools like Flasgger or Marshmallow to generate OpenAPI specs automatically from your code. If an endpoint isn't in the spec, it shouldn't exist in the binary. This forces developers to document every route they create, bringing 'shadow' code into the light.
import os from flask import Flask, jsonify, abort from flasgger import Swaggerapp = Flask(name)
Enforce documentation as code
swagger = Swagger(app)
@app.route(‘/api/v1/health’) def health(): """ Health Check Endpoint --- responses: 200: description: System status """ return jsonify({“status”: “ok”})
Secure Gating: Only register debug routes in development environments
if os.getenv(‘FLASK_ENV’) == ‘development’: @app.route(‘/debug/config/dump’) def dump_internal_config(): return jsonify({“status”: “debug_mode_active”}) else: @app.route(‘/debug/config/dump’) def block_shadow_route(): abort(404)
