Fix Security Misconfiguration in Spring WebFlux

Spring WebFlux's reactive stack is often deployed with 'default' settings that are a goldmine for attackers. Misconfigurations typically manifest as disabled CSRF, permissive CORS, or wide-open Actuator endpoints. To harden a reactive microservice, you must move from an implicit 'allow' to an explicit 'deny-by-default' posture using a properly tuned SecurityWebFilterChain.

The Vulnerable Pattern

@Bean
public SecurityWebFilterChain leakyChain(ServerHttpSecurity http) {
    return http
        .csrf().disable() // Vulnerable to CSRF in session-based apps
        .authorizeExchange()
        .pathMatchers("/actuator/**").permitAll() // Exposing sensitive metrics/env
        .anyExchange().permitAll()
        .and().build();
}

The Secure Implementation

The secure configuration implements four critical layers: 1. CSRF Protection: Re-enabled with a Cookie-based repository suitable for modern SPAs. 2. Security Headers: Explicitly sets CSP to prevent XSS and Frame Options to stop Clickjacking. 3. Least Privilege: Actuator endpoints are restricted; only non-sensitive data (health/info) is public, while the rest requires ADMIN roles. 4. Default Deny: All other exchanges require authentication, preventing unauthorized access to business logic.

@Bean
public SecurityWebFilterChain hardenedChain(ServerHttpSecurity http) {
    return http
        .csrf(csrf -> csrf.csrfTokenRepository(CookieServerCsrfTokenRepository.withHttpOnlyFalse()))
        .headers(headers -> headers
            .contentSecurityPolicy(csp -> csp.policyDirectives("default-src 'self'"))
            .frameOptions(frame -> frame.mode(XFrameOptionsServerHttpHeadersWriter.Mode.DENY))
        )
        .authorizeExchange(exchanges -> exchanges
            .pathMatchers("/actuator/health", "/actuator/info").permitAll()
            .pathMatchers("/actuator/**").hasRole("ADMIN")
            .pathMatchers("/api/v1/internal/**").hasIpAddress("10.0.0.0/8")
            .anyExchange().authenticated()
        )
        .httpBasic(Customizer.withDefaults())
        .build();
}
