Fix Security Misconfiguration in Iris

Iris is a high-performance Go web framework, but its default settings often favor developer velocity over production hardening. Security misconfigurations in Iris typically manifest as verbose error leakage (stack traces in responses) and missing HTTP security headers. To secure the instance, you must suppress debug logs in production and implement a strict security middleware policy.

The Vulnerable Pattern

package main

import “github.com/kataras/iris/v12”

func main() { app := iris.New() // VULNERABILITY: Verbose logging reveals internal routes and logic app.Logger().SetLevel(“debug”)

app.Get("/data", func(ctx iris.Context) {
    // VULNERABILITY: Default Iris behavior might leak stack traces on panic
    panic("db connection failed")
})

app.Listen(":8080")

}

The Secure Implementation

The fix addresses two critical areas: Information Disclosure and Attack Surface Reduction. By lowering the LogLevel to 'warn', we ensure internal application structure and debug metadata aren't captured in logs or exposed via error handlers. Implementing the 'secure' middleware injects mandatory headers (HSTS, X-Frame-Options, CSP) that mitigate common web attacks like Clickjacking and Cross-Site Scripting (XSS). Finally, moving to port 443 with TLS ensures data in transit is encrypted, preventing credential sniffing.

package main

import ( “github.com/kataras/iris/v12” “github.com/iris-contrib/middleware/secure” )

func main() { app := iris.New() // FIX: Set log level to warn/error in production to prevent info leakage app.Logger().SetLevel(“warn”)

// FIX: Use security middleware for HSTS, XSS Protection, and Frame Options
s := secure.New(secure.Options{
    AllowedHosts:          []string{"example.com"},
    SSLRedirect:           true,
    STSSeconds:            31536000,
    FrameDeny:             true,
    ContentTypeNosniff:    true,
    BrowserXssFilter:      true,
    ContentSecurityPolicy: "default-src 'self'",
})
app.Use(s.Serve)

app.Get("/data", func(ctx iris.Context) {
    ctx.WriteString("Secure Data")
})

// FIX: Use iris.TLS for encrypted transport
app.Listen(":443")

}
