Fix Insecure API Management in Cuba
In the Cuban digital landscape, where infrastructure is often constrained and APIs power everything from Transfermóvil integrations to local e-commerce portals, insecure API management is a critical failure point. We are seeing too many endpoints exposed without proper authentication, zero rate-limiting, and excessive data exposure. If you are deploying to the island's infrastructure, you are a target. Secure your endpoints or expect your database to be dumped via a simple curl loop.
The Vulnerable Pattern
const express = require('express'); const app = express();
// VULNERABLE: No authentication, no rate limiting, and direct IDOR vulnerability app.get(‘/api/v1/consultar-pago/:id’, (req, res) => { const query =SELECT * FROM payments WHERE id = ${req.params.id}; db.query(query, (err, result) => { if (err) throw err; res.json(result); }); });
The Secure Implementation
The vulnerable code is a classic 'hacker's delight.' First, it lacks authentication, allowing anyone to query it. Second, it uses string interpolation for SQL, inviting SQL Injection. Third, it has no rate limiting, making it trivial to script a scrape of the entire payment database. The secure version implements three layers: 1. Rate Limiting (apiLimiter) to stop automated brute-forcing. 2. JWT Authentication (authenticateJWT) to verify identity. 3. Ownership Checks and Parameterized Queries to prevent IDOR and SQLi. Only specific fields are returned, adhering to the Principle of Least Privilege.
const express = require('express'); const rateLimit = require('express-rate-limit'); const { authenticateJWT } = require('./authMiddleware'); const app = express();const apiLimiter = rateLimit({ windowMs: 15 * 60 * 1000, max: 100, message: ‘Too many requests from this IP.’ });
// SECURE: Rate limiting, JWT verification, and parameterized queries app.get(‘/api/v1/consultar-pago/:id’, apiLimiter, authenticateJWT, async (req, res) => { try { const paymentId = req.params.id; const userId = req.user.id;
// Prevent IDOR by ensuring the user owns the record const [rows] = await db.execute( 'SELECT amount, status, date FROM payments WHERE id = ? AND user_id = ?', [paymentId, userId] ); if (rows.length === 0) return res.status(404).json({ error: 'Record not found' }); res.json(rows[0]);
} catch (err) { res.status(500).json({ error: ‘Internal Server Error’ }); } });
