Fix API Rate Limit Exhaustion in Polka
Polka's minimalism is a double-edged sword. Out of the box, it lacks the protective scaffolding found in heavier frameworks, leaving your endpoints exposed to DoS attacks and resource exhaustion. In a high-stakes environment, an unthrottled API is a liability. To harden a Polka-based service, we must inject a rate-limiting middleware to track request velocity and drop excessive traffic at the edge.
The Vulnerable Pattern
const polka = require('polka');
// VULNERABLE: No rate limiting implemented. // An attacker can flood this endpoint to exhaust server resources or database connections. polka() .get(‘/api/resource’, (req, res) => { res.end(‘Data delivered without restriction.’); }) .listen(3000, err => { if (err) throw err; console.log(’> Running on localhost:3000’); });
The Secure Implementation
The vulnerability stems from the lack of request orchestration. By default, Polka processes every incoming request as fast as the event loop allows. The fix utilizes the `express-rate-limit` middleware, which is fully compatible with Polka's middleware signature. This implementation tracks the requester's IP address and maintains a counter within a defined time window (windowMs). Once the 'max' threshold is hit, the middleware intercepts the request, preventing it from reaching the route handler and returning a HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests) status. This protects the application layer from being overwhelmed by automated scripts or malicious actors.
const polka = require('polka'); const rateLimit = require('express-rate-limit');// SECURE: Implementing a rate limiter middleware. // Polka is compatible with Express middleware. const limiter = rateLimit({ windowMs: 15 * 60 * 1000, // 15 minutes max: 100, // Limit each IP to 100 requests per window standardHeaders: true, // Return rate limit info in the
RateLimit-*headers legacyHeaders: false, // Disable theX-RateLimit-*headers message: ‘Too many requests, please try again later.’ });
polka() .use(limiter) .get(‘/api/resource’, (req, res) => { res.end(‘Data delivered with rate limiting protection.’); }) .listen(3000, err => { if (err) throw err; console.log(’> Running on localhost:3000’); });
